Storm Restoration Sales

The First 48 Hours After a Storm Are Worth More Than the Next Two Weeks

Most roofing sales teams wait too long after a hail storm. Here's how the fastest-closing teams structure their first 48 hours after a weather event, from mapping the damage to following up every not-home.

By NomoHub | Field Sales Playbook

Every roofing contractor knows a storm is an opportunity. What most don't think about carefully enough is how narrow that window actually is.

In the first 48 hours after a significant hail event, homeowners are outside looking at their roofs, neighbors are talking, and your competitors are mobilizing. By day three, the urgency starts to fade. By day seven, half those homeowners have already talked to someone else. By the time most sales teams have their act together, the best jobs on the block are gone.

This is a solvable problem. The teams that consistently close the most storm jobs aren't the ones with the most reps. They're the ones who move the fastest with the most structure. Here's what that actually looks like.

Step One: Map the Damage Before Anyone Leaves the Building

The instinct when a storm hits is to send everyone out immediately. Resist it. Thirty minutes of planning before you deploy will outperform three hours of scattered knocking every time.

Pull real-time hail data and map it by address before your first rep hits a door. You're looking for density and size: where did 1-inch or larger hail fall, and which streets had the most coverage? That's your hot zone. Those are the streets where you can knock six houses and find four with damage, instead of six houses and find one.

Most teams that skip this step burn the first four hours knocking on doors in areas that got half an inch of rain. Their reps drive home frustrated. The team that planned first spent those same four hours closing jobs on the three streets where every single roof needs replacing.

"Before anyone left for the day, we mapped the whole event in Storm Mode. We knew exactly which neighborhoods to hit, and we had reps closing by noon." Jake S., Rooster Roofing

Step Two: Treat Every Door Like It Has an Outcome

When a rep knocks a door, one of four things happens: the homeowner is interested, they say no, they say call me later, or nobody answers. Most sales operations only track the first two. That's a mistake that costs real money.

The "not home" list from your first day of canvassing is one of the most valuable things your team will generate all week. Those people have a damaged roof. They weren't ignoring you. They were at work. They were at school. They were asleep because they work nights. They're going to need a roofer.

If your team doesn't have a system to log every door, assign a status, and follow up in 24 hours, you are generating leads and immediately throwing them away. Build the habit of logging everything: the address, the status, the time, and any notes from the conversation. Then work that list on day two before you knock a single new door.

What to Track at Every Door

Not interested. Opportunity. Not home. Come back. Already signed with someone. Appointment set. Six simple statuses. If your reps are writing this on a legal pad in their truck or texting it to a group chat, information is getting lost. There's no version of a paper system that actually follows up reliably at scale.

Step Three: Don't Let the Follow-Up Fall Through

The math on storm follow-up is better than most people think. If your team knocked 80 doors on day one and 30 were "not home," that's 30 houses with potentially damaged roofs where nobody said no. Work that list first thing on day two, in the early evening when people are actually home from work, and you'll typically convert 30 to 40 percent of those into legitimate conversations.

That means 10 to 12 conversations from a list your competitors probably abandoned. Over the course of a storm season, those numbers compound into a significant revenue difference.

Step Four: Close at the Door, Not in Your Inbox

This is where a lot of sales teams leak money without knowing it. The rep has a great conversation. The homeowner is interested. The rep says "I'll send you a proposal tonight" and leaves. By the time that email goes out, it's 9pm, the homeowner has talked to another roofer who gave them something on the spot, and your rep is starting from zero the next morning.

If your team can produce an estimate and a branded proposal at the door, your close rate on interested homeowners goes up significantly. That means having a fast estimate tool on the rep's phone, a proposal that looks professional and includes your company branding, and an e-signature capability so the homeowner can sign before the rep walks back to their truck.

Storm season isn't about working harder. It's about building a system that captures more of the opportunity that's already in front of your team. The storm created the lead. The question is whether you have the structure to close it before someone else does.

NomoHub was built specifically for this workflow: real-time storm data, knock tracking, field estimates, proposals, and e-signatures in one app. If your team is still piecing this together across five different tools, there's a faster way.
